This has nothing to do with games; but, I thought I would run through the movies I actually saw this Summer. Especially since we're starting to be inundated with the DVDs. I didn't see every movie (or even every "big" movie); I'll only comment on the ones I saw. I'll rate each movie on a ten-point scale, even though I don't really think you can find 10 gradations in quality; but, anyway...In the order in which I think of them...

  • Iron Man (10): One of the best movies I've seen in years. I can watch this over and over and never get tired of it. Everything about the film--led by Downey, Jr.'s acting--is spot on.
  • Kung Fu Panda (9): Second-best movie of the Summer and the first Dreamworks CG film to stand up to Pixar (and win). KFP is just a really, really fun time for the whole family.
  • Prince Caspian (6): I was really disappointed the spiritual part of the book was effectively neutered. Of course, the Caspian book is the second-worst of Lewis' series (Magician's Nephew is--by far--the worst) and extremely talky, so I understand why they didn't want a faithful translation. Still, the movie was more about Ben Barnes looking soulful than how the Pevensie children regained their faith.
  • Indiana Jones 4 (6): I'm tempted to rate this one with its place in the series. From beginning to end, this movie was just weak and boring.
  • The Incredible Hulk (5): I know Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk is not popular (I loved it); but, why a rote remake without Lee's signature touches? The battles are smaller, the characters are smaller, the stages are smaller--even Banner's rage is smaller. (Actually, this Banner doesn't even have to get mad; he only needs to make his heart beat faster. Any kind of thrill will do...weak.)
  • Hancock (4): The first half-hour of this movie is about a 7 or 8; then, once Hancock gets his act together, it completely falls apart. Bleh.
  • Wall*E (5): Very weak Pixar film. The first hour is a disparate series of vignettes the animators must have thought would be "cool" with little (or no) thought put into making them logically connected (or even possible--I'm willing to suspend belief for some things; but, a VHS tape that is still working after 800 years? Come on!) The last act is exciting; but, it's too little too late. On the other hand, it appears to appeal to the kids. My oldest son says it is his favorite Pixar film. Mine is still Ratatouille.
  • The Dark Knight (5): Ledger's performance earns 2 points; the rest of the movie is a jumbled mess. There are actually two good movies lurking in here, they should have saved Harvey Dent for (new) Batman 3 and put Joker on screen more. I wonder if Ledger's performance would be as riveting if we didn't know it drove him to his death? We'll never know; but, see it once and just skip to every scene with the Joker. The rest of the movie won't make any sense, so you aren't missing anything.
  • You Don't Mess With the Zohan (2). Oy vey!
  • Hellboy 2 (8): As good as (or better) than the original Hellboy. Lots of fun, great action sequences and good acting. Not to mention a visual style that surpasses every other film this Summer.
  • Mummy 3 (7): Good popcorn flick. Turn your brain off and enjoy Brendan Fraser being Brendan Fraser. I miss Rachel Weisz, though. Ignore the Jet Li element, he's little more than a cameo.
  • The Forbidden Kingdom (7): Another turn-your-brain-off-and-enjoy-the-ride film. Watching Chan and Li work together is the biggest thrill. They should have ditched the kid.
  • Wanted (6): A thrill ride good for one go-'round, then return it for another rental. What's with the hitman being the new hero? Even John Cusack is going back to that profession (haven't seen War Inc. yet; but, can't imagine it would be as good as Grosse Pointe Blank, the greatest assassin-as-hero movie ever made.
  • Get Smart (7): At first, I didn't really like the movie; but, it's growing on me after seeing it a second time. I'd be willing to watch GS2.
I think that covers everything I saw this Summer. If I remember a movie later...meh, I won't add it at all if it's that forgettable.
